Available through the App Store, the new Xbox experience was released on iOS on Monday. Microsoft points out the app adds remote play, allowing users to play games from the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S directly on their smartphone or tablet. This link is provided through an internet connection and is not the company’s Project xCloud. If you’re unfamiliar with xCloud, it is a cloud gaming platform that allows users to play Xbox games on any other device. Microsoft handles all resources in the cloud. In August, Microsoft stopped developing its Project xCloud preview on iOS, largely blaming Apple’s practices for the decision. The company feels Apple’s strict revenue rules make xCloud impossible on the App Store.
New App
With no xCloud support, the new iOS Xbox app with built-in remote play is the next best thing. Of course, the major difference is users need an Xbox console in their location. With Project xCloud, there is no need to have an Xbox console, with users instead singing up to Xbox Game Pass. Earlier this month, we reported Microsoft could still bring xCloud to iOS. Sources close to Microsoft say the company will use a loophole to bring Project xCloud to iPhones. Specifically, the Redmond will deliver the service to iOS users through a web browser version. Back to the new Xbox app for iOS, below are all the main features:
Set up new consoles and queue games Play remotely from your console View and share game clips & screenshots Party chat with friends across devices
Users can download the Xbox app here from Apple App Store.
